Step-by-Step

What to Expect

Before Your Visit

Prepare for your first appointment and know what to bring to make check-in as smooth as possible.

  • Bring a photo ID and insurance card
  • Arrive 15 minutes early to complete paperwork
  • List all current medications and dosages
  • Write down your symptoms and when they started
  • Bring any prior imaging (X-rays, MRI, CT scans)
  • Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for a physical exam

Preparing for Surgery

Follow these general guidelines in the days leading up to your procedure. Your care team will provide specific instructions.

  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery (unless told otherwise)
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home
  • Stop blood thinners or NSAIDs as directed by your provider
  • Shower with antibacterial soap the morning of surgery
  • Remove nail polish, jewelry, and piercings before arrival
  • Confirm your arrival time with the surgical facility

After Surgery (Post-Op Care)

General recovery guidelines for orthopaedic procedures. Your provider will give you procedure-specific instructions at discharge.

  • Keep the wound clean and dry per your discharge instructions
  • Take prescribed medications as directed — do not skip doses
  • Elevate the surgical limb to reduce swelling
  • Apply ice as directed (typically 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments
  • Call the office if you experience fever, increased swelling, or unusual drainage

Brace & Device Instructions

If your provider has prescribed a brace, sling, or assistive device, follow these general guidelines for safe use.

  • Wear the brace as directed — do not remove it for comfort unless instructed
  • Check skin beneath the brace daily for pressure sores or irritation
  • Keep the brace clean and dry
  • Adjust straps for a snug but comfortable fit — it should not restrict circulation
  • Bring the brace to all follow-up appointments for assessment
  • Contact our office with any questions about fit or wear schedule
